About a third of Germans move very little

The corona pandemic has taken care of the rest: 26 percent of the respondents are exercising less than before the pandemic due to the corona. The home office in particular has turned out to be a motion killer. 46 percent have worked from home for at least some of the time in the past two years, and more than half of them move less in the home office than in the regular workplace (56 percent).

Seldom or no exercise

According to the research, there is still room for improvement in the sport. Forty-five percent of respondents exercise rarely or not at all. According to their own statements, 35 percent of them are so busy with their families that they do not come to sports. It was only 25 percent in 2016, and TK sees this as a corona effect too – for example due to closed nurseries and schools during the lockdown.

Just over half (52 percent) managed to exercise regularly despite adverse pandemic conditions. With gyms closed and club workouts canceled during quarantine, one in five people switched to digital sports offerings like YouTube videos or online fitness courses.

Increase in use of smartwatches, fitness bracelets and apps

The study also shows a significant increase in the use of smartwatches, fitness bracelets and apps. In 2016, only 14 percent said they trained with digital support, while in 2022 this number will more than double (29 percent).

The most popular sport is cycling.

The most popular sports in Germany by far are cycling (46 percent), followed by running (26 percent) and walking and Nordic walking (25 percent), according to the study. Compared to the previous study, yoga has increased significantly by nine percent and is therefore more popular than football (six percent).

70 percent of those who exercise more than three hours a week rate their health as good or very good. Only eleven percent rate their health as less good or bad. When it comes to non-athletes, almost a quarter (23 percent) of those surveyed. Idea research institute Forsa surveyed 1,706 people aged 18 and over nationwide between 4-20 May 2022 on behalf of TK.
