These are Switzerland’s most beautiful boutique cities

Danube

Next time you travel to the Bernese Oberland, you must visit Thun. One of the landmarks of the city can be seen from afar – Thun Castle. The 12th-century exhibit houses a historical museum and, above all, offers spectacular views of the city, Lake Thun, and the surrounding mountains. The old town, located below the Schlossberg, is unique thanks to the stunning raised pavement. Here you will find numerous small shops on different levels. Mühleplatz, located in the center of the city, directly on the bank of the Aare, makes it possible to take a nice break. A walk through Schadau Park passes the magnificent Schadau Castle and the Kocher Panorama. Located in a pavilion, this circular painting is the world’s oldest surviving image of this kind.

Appenzell

To put it bluntly, Appenzell is a village, not a town. However, you can easily spend a day in this traditional place and beautiful surroundings. A visit to the Appenzell Museum is particularly worthwhile as it provides information on the traditions and crafts of Appenzell Innerrhoden. Many of these arts are still practiced today and are part of the Swiss cultural heritage. In addition to the museum, there are 69 shops on Appenzell’s beautiful main street! Everything from fashion shops to traditional crafts can be found here. The ideal place to buy your first Christmas gifts. The flavors in Appenzell should not be forgotten either. Böhli bakery in Engelgasse has a wide variety of typical Appenzell delicacies. If you are planning your visit on a Thursday, you will be invited to a public beer tasting made with spring water at the Locher brewery.

Gruyere

The idyllic town of Friborg Gruyère is located on a hill at the foot of the Alps. The village is closed to vehicular traffic and can therefore be easily explored on foot. A must-see is Gruyere Castle. It towers imposingly over the equally impressive landscape. Crowned with the incredible scenery of the Friborg Pre-Alps, visitors are offered a tour of 800 years of history here. Beautiful cobbled streets lead you comfortably from the castle to the beautiful village centre. Of course, it is necessary to taste a cream fondue, especially in the winter where Gruyere cheese comes out. If you want to experience more traditional Swiss cuisine, you can drop by Maison Cailler in the nearby town of Broc and immerse yourself in the world of chocolate.

Buren on the Aare

The village of Büren an der Aare is located between Biel and Solothurn. As the name suggests, the Aare flows through the Büren. If you have time, you can also come by ship in summer/autumn. It’s a good start to explore the colorful old town, with its highlights being the Büren Castle and the 17th-century town hall. The eventful history of Büren an der Aare can be seen in many landscapes. On the one hand, on the traditional, well-known wooden bridge that has survived many fires, including when Napoleon’s troops retreated. Or on the memorial stone in the Hefti nature reserve, which testifies to a concentration camp here during the Second World War. Today, the nature reserve, located on the old route of Aare, is a nice local recreation area for long walks.

Schaffhouse

“Lappi, tue d’Augen uf” – this inscription has been in Schwabentor since 1935, from which one enters the old city of Schaffhausen from the north. What was designed as a safety alert to cross the busy square should be the motto of today’s visitors. Since Schaffhausen is also known as the city of bay windows, a total of 171 of these porches can be explored here. Further south of the old town is Herrenacker, the city’s largest square. Once upon a time, knightly tournaments were held here. This beautiful spot is still used today for numerous events such as the City of Stars Festival. Here, too, the economy invites you to linger with a glass of fruity Schaffhausen wine. Because thanks to the mild and dry climate in Schaffhausen Blauburgunderland, full-bodied wines are produced around the city of Schaffhausen.

The city of Zug is characterized by a wonderful seaside promenade, idyllic old town streets and an environment with lots of cherry trees and views of the Alps. Thanks to the headquarters of many international companies, you can meet people from all over the world here. And when Zug advertises the most beautiful sunset in Switzerland, it’s pretty much true. Anyone watching the sun set behind the lakeside hills from one of the many beautiful spots on the Zug promenade must admit – Zug sunsets are hard to beat. But before that, you should definitely take advantage of the sunshine to visit the old town of Zug and enjoy a piece of Zug cherry pie in one of the many cafes. It is said to have been invented by Heinrich Höhn in 1915 and transferred to Jacques Treichler with all trademark rights in 1943. Confectionery Treichler is considered the inventor of this delicacy. Here you can also visit the Zuger Kirschtorte Museum and taste Zuger Kirsch.

Delemont

The small town of Delsberg is located in northwest Switzerland. The main city of the canton of Jura is located in its typical, wooded hilly landscape and is ideal for a day trip. The beautiful old town with its squares and monumental fountains can be explored with fun on the “Circuit Secret Delémont”. This circular route passes through a total of six interesting districts, bringing a whole new perspective to the historic city. Access to buildings is provided by digital code. Visitors are entertained by cartoons drawn by Jurassic artist Dexter Maurer. It is worth taking a winding road from the city to nature to enjoy the view of the city center and the unique view of the Jura. For the more athletic visitors, there is the thirteen-kilometer-long “Sentier Agusute Quiquerez” circular route, where thirty panels provide background information on the archeology, flora and fauna, geology and ecology of the Jura.

The most famous sight of the small town of Avenches in Vaud is the Roman amphitheater and the modern Roman museum that goes with it. The well-preserved open-air theater is a historical testimony from 2000 years ago when Aventicum was the capital of Roman Helvetia. Today it hosts numerous cultural events such as the Opera Festival or the Avenches Tattoo. A tour to the Roman sites begins in the beautiful old town, where you can linger on the terraces on sunny days. Avenches is also the headquarters of the Swiss National Stud, founded in 1898. The tradition of breeding and breeding horses has been part of the Avenches since the days of the Celts and is still alive today, with the national breeder dedicated to the mission of preserving the last remaining Swiss horse breed, the Freiberger.
