There’s a new Princess Diaries movie – 11 sequels in the works

This week, The Hollywood Reporter announced that Disney is working on a sequel to Princess Diaries. It is not yet clear whether Anne Heathaway will reprise her role as Princess Amelia. However, Heathaway has publicly expressed her support for a third installment, so there’s hope she’ll be back.

There’s also the possibility of a sequel to another teen comedy from the 2000s: “Freaky Friday”. However, the idea didn’t come from Disney, but from the two protagonists themselves: Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis, who play a body-swapping mother-daughter duo, have both recently publicly expressed their interest in a sequel.

Curtis told Variety, “I’m turning 64 in a week and Lindsay is 36. [Eine Fortsetzung] is therefore ideal. We’re both ready, but it’s not up to us to make the movie. The right people are talking. Let’s just try to do another part.”

What other famous sequels are in the works? Here’s an overview.

After the great success of “Joker” in 2019, things went quiet around the DC villain. In the summer of this year, it was announced that there would be a second part and that Joaquin Phoenix would return as the Joker. Lady Gaga plays Harley Quinn. Other cast members include Zazie Beetz, Catherine Keener and Brendan Gleeson.

The film is set to hit theaters in October 2024.

Michael B. Jordan plays Adonis Creed, an American professional boxer, in «Creed» (2015). In the third installment of the “Rocky” spin-off, Creed is doing great in both his career and personal life. But then a childhood friend shows up and Creed must face an opponent with nothing to lose. Creed 3 is scheduled to hit theaters in March 2023.

At the end of September, Ryan Reynolds announced in a video message that there would be a third “Deadpool”. And along with Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. The film is expected in November 2024.

Since the first Transformers movie came out in 2007, starring Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox, the franchise has grown steadily. The seventh part “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” will be released in cinemas in June 2023. This should play out in the world “Bumblebee” created in 2018.

Eddie Redmayne returns as Newt Scamander for his fourth Harry Potter adventure. In «Fantastic Beasts 4», the danger of the dark mage has not yet been eradicated. To defeat him, all forces must be united. The fantasy film is planned for 2025, the fifth part for 2028.

In “Constantine”, Keanu Reeves hunts demons on Earth. In 2023, Reeves returns to the big screen as Demon Hunter. The sequel is also based on the DC Comics of the same name.

The first Gremlins movie came out in 1984 and the sequel followed in 1990. A third movie about the little creatures that turn into monsters has now been announced. It is not yet known when the latest sequel will hit theaters.

“Avatar 2: The Way of Water” will be released in Swiss cinemas on December 14. But that’s not all: three more parts are already planned, including fixed start dates.

In 2009, Robert Downey Jr. his screen debut as Detective Sherlock Holmes. The second part was released in 2011 and then a next film was also announced. After that it became quiet around the British cult figure. Now the film actually has to be made, reports “One Take News”. Filming is scheduled for this year. The film could hit theaters in late 2023 or 2024. Jude Law will also reprise his role as Dr. John Watson hatch.

Downey is also working on two Sherlock Holmes series for HBO.

In 1988, “Beetlejuice” by director Tim Burton hit theaters. Now comes a sequel to the comedy, in which a ghost couple enlists the help of Beetlejuice to get rid of the family in their home. In the sequel, Michael Keaton returns as Beetlejuice. Winona Ryder is also back on board as Lydia Deetz. There is no official start date for the horror comedy yet.

Harrison Ford returns as Indiana Jones for the last time. The first three films were made in the 1980s. Only 30 years later (2008) did the fourth part hit theaters and a fifth part was announced for next year. Steven Spielberg was set to direct, as with previous installments, but handed over to James Mangold in 2020. Spielberg continues as producer. Nothing is known about the story yet.
