Guillermo del Toro (“Pan’s Labyrinth”) is one of the biggest movie buffs. His films are permeated with a melancholy obsessed with details, which expresses his pure passion for the bizarre, the unnatural, the morbid in every shot. But this fervor also means that del Toro had to drop many projects in his career, even though they were absolutely dear to him. This includes the adaptation of HP Lovecraft’s At The Mountains Of Madness.
As early as 2006, del Toro was working on adapting the story for the big screen. He originally had Studio Warner on board, with James Cameron producing and starring Tom Cruise. Despite the production halt, del Toro hasn’t given up hope of finally directing his adaptation of At The Mountains Of Madness.
In line with this, the filmmaker has now published surprisingly exclusive CGI test material for the film via Instagram, which we will never see in this form:
Created by Lucasfilms Industrial Light and Magic, the effects show an investigator being surprised by a tentacled monster. Lovecraft’s At The Mountains Of Madness, first published in 1931, follows a group of adventurers who travel to Antarctica, discovering some shocking mysteries along the way. As the clip impressively shows, they also get to deal with some pretty crazy creatures.
