After the appropriation debate: ORF lets Winnetou drive again

It has become a bit quieter around Winnetou. It was not until the summer that a sometimes heated debate about cultural appropriation and racism ignited in Karl May’s books and films. The ORF has now acquired broadcast licenses for “Winnetou I”, “Winnetou II” and “Winnetou III” and is putting the trilogy in the ORF 2 program before the Christmas holidays, as a spokesperson confirmed on APA request.

When exactly the adventures of Winnetou and Old Shatterhand can be seen is still open. The three films are part of a classic film package that ORF broadcasts in the morning and afternoon programs during the holidays. It also includes the “Sisi” trilogy, “Sound of Music” and “The Little Lord”.

In late August, a debate about cultural appropriation and racism ignited after Ravensburger Verlag withdrew two books about the movie “The Young Chief Winnetou,” as well as a puzzle and sticker book.

The publisher justified its decision with user feedback, stating that “we hurt the feelings of others with the Winnetou titles”. A number of people then expressed their incomprehension and accused the company of censoring or giving in to criticism. But there was also support for the decision. (sda/apa)
