It was only a matter of time before this cult is revived (and several lawsuits over the rights), but now the time has come: Jason Voorhees is back! For the renowned Studio A24 (“Midsommar”, “Everything Everywhere All at Once”) Bryan Fuller the series”Crystal Lake” put in order – and he is well known for popular serial killers as he was primarily responsible for the celebrated thriller series “Hannibal” starring Mads Mikkelsen as Hannibal Lecter (as well as developing series hits such as “Star Trek: Discovery” and “American Gods” involved) . As reports, Fuller is set to write the script, produce and serve as showrunner.
That’s what “Crystal Lake” will be about
It is not yet entirely clear what the series “Crystal Lake” should look like. For the development of the project, a number of stones had to be cleared. It was not clear for a long time who owned which rights to the story of “Friday the 13th”. Things look different after a few lawsuits. Original screenwriter Victor Miller, who will co-produce Crystal Lake, will own the story and characters. However, he does not own the rights to the “Friday the 13th” title or the iconic hockey mask.
These rights in turn belong to Rob Barsamian, who will also work as a producer on the new project. Apparently, two parties to the judicial dispute have come to an agreement and have been able to join forces. A prequel series is to be created, which will then run on Universal’s streaming channel Peacock (whose content usually ends up on Sky in this country). So it will be about the prequel of Friday the 13th and therefore probably the early years of Voorhees. Actually, he should be able to do without his signature hockey mask (even in the movies it wasn’t until part 3). But it is possible that she will show up later.
“Crystal Lake” has been compared by its creators to the series “Bates Motel”, which is known to be a kind of prequel to Alfred Hitchcock’s horror classic “Psycho”. And just like there, the relationship between the main character and her mother should play a very central role in the prequel “Friday the 13th”. Sounds like a very exciting project for sure!
