WWF seeks commitment from attendees at climate conference

Christoph Heinrich, managing director of WWF Germany, referred to the relevant decisions of the conference in Glasgow. “We have to stick with it,” Heinrich told AFP news agency even in the current energy crisis.

Heinrich emphasized that due to this crisis, there is also an “escape to fossil energy” in Germany at the moment. “The conference should send a clear signal against this,” the WWF board said. “Fossil fuels shouldn’t have a renaissance.”

energy crisis issues

On the German side, too, “false signals” have been produced lately, with the “gas shopping frenzy” and an image that the government needs to “correct” again. “There must be a clear commitment to the energy transition from Germany and the EU and then the whole world,” Heinrich said. “The signal must be energy transition and energy efficiency.”

However, the WWF board still sees the federal government as a whole on track towards the energy transition and expansion of green electricity. While there are those “who want to turn it down” in Germany, he sees no trend that “fossil energies will open the door any longer”, at least with Federal Minister of Economy Robert Habeck (The Greens).

This is different in some other EU countries, such as Poland, where the current crisis has been abused to switch back to domestic coal. In Germany, too, there is a risk that, with new agreements on gas supply, the country will be “bound on long-term contracts” and therefore use fossil fuels for longer than necessary.

Germany’s influence at the climate conference

Heinrich also hesitated to comment on the new liquid gas terminals, the first of which will be operational by the end of the year: it must be suitable for hydrogen.”

“Germany must continue to be a strong voice in the world for renewable energies and the energy transition,” Heinrich said for the international climate consultations that will begin in Sharm el-Sheikh on 6 November. said. It was a feature of this country,” he said.
