Gusts of wind hitting the armchair in Cervinia (IT): woman talks about the 40 terrible minutes

There were nasty scenes on Thursday in the Cervinia (IT) ski area, which borders Zermatt. Because the weather situation suddenly deteriorated, the Cretaz chairlift had to close. However, before the last passengers reached the top, gusts of wind hit the elevator so forcefully that the chairs came to a standstill.

For the passengers still in the elevator, it was the start of a miserable 40 minutes. A 48-year-old woman who was skiing in Cervinia with a friend that day told the Daily Mail about the ‘most terrifying experience of her life’.

New Zealander Stephanie Burt traveled with her family and a friend to the Italian ski resort Cervino in Cervinia at the beginning of this week. The mother of two and experienced skier had gone to the Cretaz chairlift with a friend on Thursday afternoon when visibility suddenly deteriorated. Shortly before the summit the lift was switched off because the wind tolerance of 70 km/h had been exceeded.

Burt tells the English newspaper that it was only thanks to her boyfriend, who weighs 100 kilos, that she did not fall off her chair. They also almost collided with another chair.

Behind them, a man sat alone in the elevator, screaming as his chair was tossed about by the wind. The cover mechanism on the elevator acted “like a sail” and increased slippage. The man eventually fell off the chair and another skier captured the moment on camera. It is not clear whether he jumped or fell.

Burt also considered jumping because she was afraid of crashing into the other chair. She and her friend discussed whether it was better to jump or fall:

Thinking of her children, she decided to persevere.

The ski lift operators said after the incident that no passengers were injured. According to Burt, those responsible for the Breuil-Cervinia ski area, managed by Cervino SpA, downplayed the danger.

The New Zealand interior designer told the Daily Mail she would only ski in Italy again if the resort improved safety standards.

(haha)
