The official Swiss time is implemented and distributed by the Federal Metrology Office (Metas) in Wabern BE. Researchers there use several atomic clocks to determine the exact length of a second. These measurements from Bern are used to determine Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). In response to a question from the Keystone-SDA news agency, Jürg Niederhauser from Metas said, “The time change actually has no significance for what is happening in our time laboratory.”
Time change is actually a byproduct of this time determination. One hour is added to UTC for Central European Time (CET) and two hours are added to UTC for Central European Summer Time (CEST).
“No one needs to push a button at two in the morning,” Niederhauser said. This would also be very vague. Instead, this is pre-programmed.
However, it is not used by official Swiss time, train station clocks, church tower clocks and many alarm clocks. Since the Swiss time signal transmitter at Prangins VD was shut down, Swiss radio-controlled clocks receive their signals from Germany. A radio tower nearly 200 meters high near Frankfurt am Main broadcasts the exact time every second, every hour of the day. It splits its time from Meta’s German counterpart, the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) in Braunschweig.
Cell phones work differently. They receive time signals from the nearest cell phone antenna. GPS devices communicate with satellites.
Ending the time change has been discussed in the EU for a long time. The European Union has specifically planned this since 2018, and the EU Commission has presented a draft law on this. Even the European Parliament accepted this, but postponed the end of the time change planned for 2019 to 2021. But in reality, member states did not comply and suspended the plans.
The central issue in the EU debate is the disagreement over which time should actually prevail – winter time, so-called standard time, which is now ending, or summer time. Patchwork quilts with several time zones should be avoided; Some EU countries are generally against ending the time change. transformed.
Abolition of daylight saving time in Switzerland is also being discussed. In 2010, former Senior Vice President Yvette Estermann unsuccessfully called for a motion to abolish daylight saving time. The Federal Council emphasized that Switzerland became a time island when surrounding countries switched to daylight saving time in 1980, but Switzerland decided not to do so. Negativity towards the economy emerged. In order to eliminate these disadvantages, Switzerland caught up with its neighboring countries and switched to summer time a year later.
It is likely that Switzerland will adapt to the EU this time too. In order to implement eternal summer time, a decision of the Parliament and an amendment to the law are required. For the eternal winter period, the decision of the Federal Council will be sufficient. (SDA)
