As always, we would of course like to highlight some highlights that we think may be of particular interest to our readership:
Highlights for 99 cents on Amazon Prime Video
“The whales“: With the drama about an overweight man who increasingly isolates himself from his environment, Brendan Fraser, one of THE Hollywood superstars of the 90s, celebrated his big comeback – and how! He really deserves the Oscar for Best Actor. The FILMSTARTS review gave it 4.5 stars.
“The last voyage of the Demeter“: The atmospheric Dracula film adaptation was virtually lost in cinemas last summer. Perhaps the head vampire at the end could have been better placed in the title of the film to generate more attention. Anyway, we liked the atmospheric, richly equipped historical sea horror, despite its weaknesses. (3 stars)
“The Exorcist: Confession“: After his ‘Halloween’ trilogy, David Gordon Green devoted himself to the next super classic of horror cinema last October – and in the process sent many fans of William Friedkin’s legendary original into a frenzy. However, FILMSTARTS chief critic Christoph Petersen managed to get something out of it – and gave it a big 3 stars.
“The woman in the mist“: Do you have a soft spot for exciting cinema from South Korea? Then the latest masterpiece from ‘Oldboy’ creator Park Chan-Wook is an absolute must for you. Conclusion: 4.5 stars, one of the best films of 2023!
“Dogman“: Luc Besson (“Leon – The Professional”) surprised us with one of the most exciting genre films of 2023. ‘Dogman’ positions itself somewhere between ‘Joker’, a twisted ‘horse whisperer’ and the adult version of ‘Home Alone’. Absolutely amazing: Caleb Landry Jones in the title role. (4.5 stars)
“Kingdom II – Far and away“: The sequel to the Japanese mix of battle epic and martial arts hit celebrated its local home theater premiere just two weeks ago. You can watch it for less than a euro. And get in the mood for the third part that will be released soon.
“Ennio Morricone – The Maestro“: Ennio Morricone is perhaps the greatest film composer of all time, who, not least, turned Sergio Leone’s Western masterpieces with Clint Eastwood into unique, atmospheric, timeless cinema experiences. And the documentary does full justice to the work of the grandmaster, at least as far as is possible in just two and a half hours.
“How to have sex“: Party euphoria, excessive foreign shame and a cocktail of tender and shocking observations about the urge for sexual exploration. As far as we are concerned, ‘How To Have Sex’ was rightly one of the festival hits of 2023. (4 stars)
“The moon“: The South Korean film production only celebrated its German premiere at the beginning of this year. Fans of sci-fi adventures like “Interstellar,” “Gravity,” and “The Martian” can take a look — even if the film ultimately doesn’t quite reach the level of its Hollywood counterparts.
“The Roundup: No Way Out“: The third part of the action saga with crowd favorite Don Lee celebrated its German premiere at the Fantasy Filmfest and then went straight to streaming almost two months ago – and we’re looking forward to part 4! Here Bud Spencer meets “Dirty Harry” and “The Raid”.
“There’s something in the shed“: Easter is just around the corner, but maybe you’re still in the mood for the bloody, bizarre Christmas slasher at the end of March?
“The old way“: If you are a Nicolas Cage fan and every film of the enfant terrible is a must for you, you can now close the gap with the western. However, we cannot give a real recommendation for the 1.5-star flop…
“Muzzle – K-9 Narcotics Unit“: Police action with a four-legged friend bonus: The action thriller, which was only released directly to home theaters in November, features the nasty “Avatar” villain (Stephen Lang), a Batman nemesis (Aaron Eckhart) and a titanium dog teeth – and no Research Fun à la “My partner with the cold nose” (who is called “K-9” in the original)
The 99 cent promotion is expected to run until Easter Sunday (March 31, 2024). As always, you rent the films digitally and then have 30 days to watch them. Once started, a 48-hour countdown will start ticking – that’s how long you need to watch a movie.
