Due to bad weather conditions: the historic Easter procession in Mendrisio is canceled

Particularly low temperatures led organizers to cancel this year’s Easter procession, Mendrisio Tourism and the city of Mendrisio wrote in a joint statement. It would be the 226th edition.

Easter weekend in Ticino this year is a real disaster. Meteo Switzerland is predicting temperatures of just eight degrees for Mendrisio on Thursday and a cool 13 degrees for Good Friday.

Moreover, according to the forecast, it is expected to rain in short intervals today, at most on Thursday, in Southern Ticino. Rain is expected across much of Ticino from Friday morning to Monday evening.

The Mendrisio procession is held annually on Holy Thursday and Good Friday and attracts thousands of spectators.

The Holy Thursday procession is dedicated to the Passion and Way of the Cross of Jesus and is performed by approximately 270 artists. The Good Friday procession is simpler and more spiritual. 700 residents, adults and children, march through the streets, accompanied by a band and carrying ceremonial items.

During the parade, the lights in the city are turned off and the streets are illuminated only by the glow of “Trasparenti”. These internally illuminated, framed, translucent paintings have been made using a special technique since the 18th century and are a distinctive feature of Mendrisio regiments.
