In Germany, “The Equalizer 3” is subtitled “The Final Chapter,” and the American posters say “Witness to the Final Chapter.” Is it really over after that? Will there be no “The Equalizer 4” with Denzel Washington? As is often the case, there is no clear answer to this.
One thing is clear: both Denzel Washington and director Antoine Fuqua have already indicated that they consider “The Equalizer 3” as the conclusion. “This seems like a good point to stop,” Washington said to the film magazine . And Fuqua confirmed: “This is the end!” It couldn’t be much clearer, could it?
Especially since There’s also a lot to be said for a farewell in ‘The Equalizer 3’. At the end, Robert McCall, played by Denzel Washington, hands the black notebook to CIA agent Emma Collins (Dakota Fanning), symbolically passing the baton to her – or the scepter, as Fuqua puts it: “At some point someone else do it Take the scepter and ensure justice. [McCall] has achieved its goal.”
Or will “The Equalizer 4” still come?
A ‘The Equalizer 4’ in which Dakota Fanning follows in the footsteps of Robert McCall would be conceivable – a bit like the series “The Equalizer” with Queen Latifah. But that is certainly not the only option:
Because Hollywood history is full of so-called final chapters and final films that weren’t so definitive after all. A striking example: “John Wick 4” actually ended very clearly and very definitively, but will most likely get a sequel anyway – because part 4 was such a great success.
With a worldwide gross of $191 million (on a budget of $70 million), “The Equalizer 3” has been a respectable success, so Denzel Washington and Antoine Fuqua might change your mind. That’s exactly how industry laws work in Hollywood. And even if there isn’t a sequel, Fuqua has already floated two ideas for a prequel:
A prequel to ‘The Equalizer’?
First, he has expressed interest in doing The Equalizer 4 as a prequel a prequel story about a young Robert McCall, played by a digitally rejuvenated Denzel Washington. Fuqua explained that he had already talked about this a lot with ‘The Equalizer 1-3’ screenwriter Richard Wenk . But for now, he wants to wait and see how the technology develops.
The movie site then gave him a much simpler and cheaper option for a prequel to “The Equalizer.” suggested: Why not just Denzel Washington’s son John David Washington (“Tenet”) as a young Robert McCall? The director mentioned this idea as ‘awesome’ and ‘cool’.
