In “Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace” she was suddenly there: a female version of Yoda was on the Jedi High Council. We didn’t learn much about the Jedi master back then. Her name is Yaddle, she comes from the same alien species as Yoda (and also Grogu from “The Mandalorian”), but is only about half Yoda’s age. But then Yaddle quickly disappeared – for practical reasons. Because after she, like Yoda in “Episode I”, was brought to life using puppet technology, George Lucas decided to use even more digital effects for “Episode II – Attack of the Clones”. But that was so complex that even Yoda’s CGI implementation was partially on the brink. There was no more time for Yaddle, it was canceled without further ado. Since then, the wildest theories have circulated among “Star Wars” fans about what could have happened to their character in the story and why they suddenly no longer belonged to the Jedi Council…

While the episode solved a major Star Wars mystery surrounding Yaddle’s fate, another popped up at the same time. Because in the episode we hear the Jedi master, who has been so taciturn until now, speak extensively. It was dubbed in the English original version by “Mandalorian” director and “Jurassic World” star Bryce Dallas Howard. The special thing about it: Yaddle speaks normally – and not with wild grammar like Yoda. This casts his earlier appearance and especially his way of speaking in a completely different light.
Does Yoda have a speech impediment? Does he want to appear particularly wise?
Until now, Star Wars fans have assumed that the species of Yoda and Yaddle (never mentioned, by the way) speak like Yoda. This species has grammar confused, just like other aliens in “Star Wars” just growl or make some noises. Of course, that has never been proven. Because with Yoda, Yaddle and Grogu there are only three known members of this species in the canon (there are a few more in the so-called Legends books, but they are not canon) and so far only Yoda has talked about these three – and that in puzzles and with wild grammar.
Now that we know it’s generally not his species’ way of speaking like that, we have to ask ourselves, why does Yoda speak like that? Did he never learn otherwise? Maybe he has a speech impediment? Is he doing it on purpose to show off his wise look and make others guess a little? So does he want to appear more mysterious? We do not know. But there will definitely be a lot of fan theories about it in the near future. The first considerations can already be found online…
Let’s see if we have to wait many years or decades for the answer again. Finally, a Star Wars series is in the works, The Acolyte, set during the High Republic era when the Jedi were at the height of their power well before the events of Episode I. Yoda and Yaddle were also active here so they could perform. In this context, we can learn more about their species and also the reason for Yoda’s quirky speech.
On the other hand, “The Acolyte” is a live-action series and the implementation of aliens like Yoda and Yaddle is very time consuming and expensive. This is often only possible to a limited extent in a series, which is why there are incredibly few alien species in the movies in relation to the “Star Wars” world in “The Mandalorian”, “Obi-Wan Kenobi” or, more recently, in . “Andor”. .
