San Andrés, Colombia

The Caribbean island of San Andrés is located off the coast of Nicaragua and is part of the territory of Colombia. It is particularly known for its palm tree-lined white beaches and laid-back reggae atmosphere. Active tourists also get their money’s worth here, as the San Andrés area has a popular diving site: Crab Bay. The world’s third largest coral reef is home to a true underwater wonderland. After a long day at the sea, having a delicious cocktail at one of the beach bars is just what you need.

Fly: Neighboring islands Santa Catalina and Providencia are also popular travel destinations. It’s not just wealthy Colombians who are discovering the beauty of the archipelago.

2

Santa Marta, Colombia

What started as the first Spanish settlement in Colombia has now become a popular travel destination. Because in Santa Marta, the Caribbean coast meets the Sierra Nevada mountains. What makes the view special: About 40 kilometers from the beach and up to peaks almost 6,000 meters high. If you prefer to be in the city rather than the mountains, Santa Marta has a historical center, museum and nice cafes. The sunrise here is particularly impressive.

Fly: If you want to go on a day tour, you should definitely visit Tayrona National Park. It is still a sacred place for indigenous tribes today, with its natural dreamy beaches and remnants of the Tairona culture.

3

Punta del Este, Uruguay

In the southeast of Uruguay, near the town of Maldonado, there is a narrow peninsula jutting out into the sea. One of Uruguay’s most popular beaches is located here: Playa Brava in the Atlantic with its strong surf. The hallmark of the beach is the statue “La Mano”, with five fingers sticking out of the ground. Playa Mansa across the street also attracts the attention of many tourists with its calm waters. The peninsula’s beaches are popular with South America’s rich and famous. But the marina and luxury resorts are not the only highlights. The view of Punta del Este is especially beautiful.

Fly: Anyone interested in music will love the International Jazz Festival held every January.

4

Costa Verde, Brazil

Not far from Rio de Janeiro lies the so-called green coast Costa Verde. It lives up to its name with its various shades of green. Small islands lie off the coast and the mountains are covered with dense rainforest. There’s something for everyone here: from swimming at dreamy beaches to hiking in the Serra do Mar mountains and visiting the megacity of Rio de Janeiro, there are plenty of attractions along this coastline. If you want to immerse yourself in nature, take the ferry to Ilha Grande.

Fly: In Ilha Grande, you can spend the night in the national park in front of Costa Verde. More than a quarter of the island is a national park with Atlantic rainforest. A pure natural paradise with more than 80 beaches.

5

Ilha de Tinharé, Brazil

The island of Ilha de Tinharé belongs to the Brazilian state of Bahia and is located south of the city of Salvador. Cars are not allowed in Morro de São Paulo, so the atmosphere is wonderfully relaxed. Arrival is by ship, ferry or catamaran. Anyone who comes to the seaside resort of Morro can browse the shops in the pedestrian area. You can then enjoy a well-deserved drink at the respective beach. If you like swimming alone, walk to one of the back sections. There are five in total, so there’s enough room for everyone.

Fly: The quieter neighboring island of Ilha de Boipeba is also closed to vehicle traffic and is worth a visit. Praia Moreré beach is particularly beautiful with its almond trees and palm trees.

6

Isla Margarita, Venezuela

Margarita Island is located in the Caribbean, northeast of Caracas, the capital of Venezuela. Ideal for travelers who want a secluded beach to spend quiet hours in the sun. The island consists of two peninsulas, between which lies the mangrove forest of Laguna de la Restinga National Park. While the rainy season on the mainland runs from May to October, Isla Margarita barely notices it. The average temperature is 27 degrees, ideal for swimming all year round.

7

Paria Peninsula, Venezuela

The Paria Peninsula in northeastern Venezuela is known for its dreamy beaches as well as its particularly high-quality cocoa beans. But not only cocoa beans grow in Paria, but also coconut trees. For example, Playa Medina, with its turquoise sea, is said to be the most beautiful beach in Venezuela.

Fly: There are beautiful hiking trails in the cloud forest of the national park. A local guide is an advantage for hiking over rocky mountain ranges or along picturesque Los Cocos Beach.

8.

French Guiana

French Guiana is located between the Amazon and the Atlantic, near the western border of Brazil. The French overseas territory is known for its tropical landscape, biodiversity and cultural mix of French and South American heritage. The capital Cayenne is a multicultural hub, holiday destination and starting point for many tours. The standard of living is high and the atmosphere is Caribbean and relaxed.

Fly: The town of Korou, where the spaceport is located, is also worth visiting. Boat tours to the beautiful Devil’s Islands (Îles du Salut) also start from here.
