While not every horror fan will agree, it can certainly be said that: No other filmmaker has been able to conquer modern horror cinema like James Wan. With the series “Saw”, “Insidious” and “Conjuring” he initiated three franchises, which – for the most part – are still expanding with great success. In addition to “The Conjuring 4”, “Saw X” and “Insidious 5”, we can also expect “The Nun 2” next year, which now also has a German theatrical release date.
On September 7, 2023, the infamous horror nun will return to German screens and will take on the challenge of pursuing the sensational success of “The Nun”. In 2018, he was able to bring in $365.5 million worldwide on a budget of $22 million, which is quite manageable these days. So a sequel was quickly decided. James W, who introduced the nun herself in The Conjuring 2, will not be acting as a director here, only as a producer.

That’s not unusual, by the way, as James Wan himself did not direct any of the “Conjuring” spin-offs (including the “Annabelle” series). Instead, “The Nun 2” is performed by Michael Chaves. He previously directed The Curse of Llorona (also part of the Conjuring universe) and The Conjuring 3: The Vampire Slayer. He is also currently rumored to be directing the recently confirmed The Conjuring 4. However, nothing has been confirmed about this.
In addition to Bonnie Aarons as the non-demon Valak, Taissa Farmiga (“American Horror Story”) also returns in “The Nun 2” as Sister Irene. New faces in the sequel’s cast include Anna Popplewell (“The Chronicles of Narnia: The King of Naria”), Storm Reid (“Euphoria”) and Katelyn Rose Downey (“The Princess”). The screenplay is by Akela Cooper (“Malignant”). Shooting recently started in France, as reported by James Wan confirmed.
What exactly “The Nun 2” will be about, is not yet known. All that is known is that the plot changes from Romania in 1952 to France in 1956. The murder of a priest is said to be the linchpin here, which ends the horror of Valak and Co. will restart. It remains to be seen if “The Nun 2” will top the box office success of the first film. In terms of quality, however, there is certainly still plenty of room for improvement. In the official FILMSTARTS review, “The Nun” only got a meager 2 out of 5 stars.
