Travel guide “Lonely Planet” recently announced its 2024 ranking of the 100 most beautiful beaches in the world. Although the list includes classic long-distance travel destinations such as Mauritius, Seychelles, Zanzibar and Thailand, almost a third of the beaches are in Europe.
For example, all you have to do is go from Switzerland to Italy to discover three beaches. The closest is Ieranto Bay on the Amalfi Coast, more precisely in Nerano. An untouched place surrounded by olive trees and prickly pear cacti, only accessible by boat or a 3 km walk.
The other two Italian spots named after “Lonely Planet” are in Sardinia and Sicily. Cala Goloritze in Sardinia impresses with its clear and colorful water, ideal for snorkeling. Cala Capreria in Sicily is surrounded by orange cliffs and also offers a magnificent panorama.
It’s no surprise that the European country with the most beaches in the Lonely Planet selection is Greece: there are five between Crete, Sporades and the islands of Milos, Andros and Kefalonia.
But Spain also has something to offer. On the mainland, the travel guide recommends Cala Estreta on the Costa Brava. A pristine beach lined with pine trees, which has the advantage of having other small bays separated by rocky peaks. Sun, fine sand and clear water; it’s all here.
Playa de Torimbia in Asturias is a beautiful crescent of pale sand and turquoise waters. In the north of the Balearic island of Formentera, Ses Illetes beach beckons you with its turquoise waters and white sands.
France has three of the best beaches in the world: Calanque d’En-Vau in Cassis, not far from Marseille, is the most impressive of the beaches along the Mediterranean coast, with its giant cliffs.
You should also see the clear water and red rocks off the coast of Palombaggia in Corsica. Les Poulains beach in Belle-île in Brittany is special because it is open on all sides. But this is not for “dummies”: the water is very cold.
The United Kingdom also ranks first among Lonely Planet’s preferred countries. If you like walking, you should visit the beach at Kynance Cove in Cornwall. Fans of geology and English literature should admire the beautiful natural archway at Durdle Door in Dorset, which inspired local writers such as Jane Austen.
On the German island of Sylt there is a beautiful, secluded beach that has inspired many painters and has been visited by naturalists since the 1920s. After Sylt was visited by some Nazi dignitaries, the island became the center of attention of the jet set, which is still frequented by billionaires today. But the dune heath is accessible to everyone.
A similar view can be seen at West Beach in Berneray, Scotland; Keem Bay in Ireland looks like the end of the world.
