Whether Emmentaler, Appenzeller or Gruyère – Switzerland is famous for its cheese. But if you believe global analysis from survey firm Mintel, there are other nations that are much crazier about cheese than we are.
Their new report on “The World’s Cutest Countries” ranks each country based on cheese imports, cheese production, and Google searches for “cheese” in their local language. Result: Switzerland is only in 7th place.
The Netherlands won the title of “the sweetest country in the world” by a wide margin. The small country, with a population of only 17 million, imports 3.1 kilograms of cheese per capita every year; This corresponds to 12 francs per person. This makes the Netherlands the world’s largest cheese buyer. According to Mintel, the Dutch produce 38 types of cheese and are also the country with the most cheese searches on Google.
It was not enough for the French to come first. 246 different varieties are produced in the country, including the world-famous Brie, Roquefort and Camembert. The last cheese only hit the headlines in mid-February. French researchers have warned of the possible end of Camembert, with its white, fluffy skin.
A single fungal species of the Penicillium camemberti species is currently used for soft cheese. Problem: Because the species is not sexually reproduced, no new genetic material is added. Over time, it lost its ability to produce the spores necessary for reproduction. It is a problem for producers to purchase mushroom species in sufficient quantities.
Another small country comes in third place. Belgium isn’t very big, and with 13 varieties produced in the country, the variety isn’t huge either. But there is a hunger for cheese.
Belgium spends an average of 9 francs per capita per year on imported cheese, ranking second after the Netherlands in terms of value per capita. The small country imports more than 1.6 kilograms of cheese per person each year; this is the second highest value in the world! That’s why Belgium took third place.
