The newly discovered Elysium is the Canary Island of El Hierro, located approximately 300 kilometers off the coast of Africa in the Atlantic. However, it offers magnificent nature with countless hiking trails, unpretentious restaurants serving honest home-cooked meals without any gimmicks, and plenty of time for yourself. The island is also known for its various wellness opportunities. How about a glass of healing water that tastes a little sulfur and is said to cure almost all ailments? But the best health is the sea view. The Atlantic roars towards the shore of black lava, bathing you in a salty mist that sets your nose and your thoughts free.

Sometimes the sea rumbles demonically, as if the island’s dormant volcanoes are waking up. This is not a remote possibility: a few years ago, an underwater volcano erupted two kilometers from the fishing village of La Restinga, causing the sea to boil. El Hierro flickered on the screens of the world, which did not please the humble inhabitants. After a few months, the ghost ended. It’s fine this way. The traditional rhythm of life and unique nature (the island has been a UNESCO biosphere since 2000) are especially important here. El Hierro is the only island that produces 100 percent of its electricity from renewable energy, thanks to a combination of hydroelectricity and wind energy.

The mini island is a chameleon that constantly changes its appearance. A dense forest grows on the mountain slopes on the northern side, watered by moist trade wind clouds. Leaves, mosses and lichens filter moisture from the air and fill the island’s water reservoirs. While the northern part is usually covered with a layer of clouds, the south of the island has a permanent weather pattern: clear and dry. That’s the great thing about El Hierro; When you need sun, just walk over the mountain for a short time. Fig forests, house-sized cacti and pine trees are sprouting there. El Hierro is a mixture of the Thai tropical island of Provence and the volcanic island of Hawaii.

Thumbnail-perfect volcanic cones dot the landscape. In between lie lava fields of every imaginable shape, sometimes porous like air chocolate, sometimes floating like cow dung. The shapes are fascinating and more and more mystical looking lava rocks are piling up in the bag as souvenirs for friends.

The village of La Restinga, with a population of 500 and almost no visitors, is the “mass tourism destination” of the island. Here you can watch fishermen land boxes of fresh parrotfish (a local specialty), children play on the small beach, and men relax and drink beer on the quay wall. Otherwise, life here flows slowly, like a lava flow. Pure relaxation!
