Just as Jack Sparrow, more than a tad megalomaniac, believes that people must have heard of him and that he is the greatest pirate of all time, Dick Turpin strives for something similar – just in a different criminal field.
So he wants to become nothing less than the most famous highwayman in all of England. And that almost gets him to the gallows every now and then – just like Captain Jack Sparrow. But Dick Turpin’s request comes with a catch: while the crook can talk his way out of almost any situation, he’s not a particularly good robber. And it’s only by chance that he becomes the leader of the infamous Essex gang.
‘The Fictional Adventures of Dick Turpin’ now on Apple TV+
Where does this lead? To the “The Imaginary Adventures of Dick Turpin,” the first two episodes of which are now available AppleTV+ can stream. In total, the season consists of six half-hour episodes, with a new episode every Friday – a quick weekend snack for anyone who wants something turbulent costume adventure and strange British humor in the Gaga style of Monty Python might be worth a look.
Dick Turpin is charming, always well-coiffed and has acting talent, but for the son of a butcher, these are not exactly the qualities needed to survive in the 18th century. When his father throws him out on the street, Dick Turpin, who has a tendency to slide headlessly from one absurd situation to another, becomes the leader of a street gang (Mark Wootton, Ellie White, Duayne Boachie). So why not make a career as a robber? The gang just has to be careful not to end up in the clutches of police officer Jonathan Wilde (“Downton Abbey” star Hugh Bonneville).
