Mexico’s airport is closed due to volcanic ash

The airport in the central city of Puebla is closed due to new ash fall from a volcano in Mexico. The runway as well as the taxiway and platforms had to be cleared of the ash of the Popocatépetl, which is more than 5,000 meters high, the civil defense of the state of Puebla announced on Wednesday. Earlier, 22 flights were canceled at the international airport of the capital Mexico City after ash was found on the planes.

According to the National Civil Protection Authority, 13 emissions of gas, steam and ash and almost continuous tremors were recently recorded in the volcano in one day. However, the alert level remained unchanged at yellow level 2.

The Popocatépetl (“Smoking Mountain”) is one of the most active volcanoes in Mexico. It is located on the border of the states of Mexico, Puebla and Morelos. There is an exclusion zone of twelve kilometers around the volcano. (sda/dpa)
