Now the age rating for the popular Disney film has been increased by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) – from “Universal” (U) to “Parental Guidance” (PG). This means: Children up to and including 8 years old are not allowed to watch the film without a parent.
The classic film is being reclassified due to “discriminatory language”.
The word “Hottentots” – a term for indigenous ethnic groups in Africa that is now classified as racist – is used twice in the film. In the film the term is used in reference to faces blackened by soot.
The film classification board is aware of the historical context of the film. But because the language is unclassified, it doesn’t meet the guidelines for a ‘U’ film. Since children like to parrot the terminology, parents are now responsible for raising their children accordingly. (cst)
