Fantasy competition for “Lord of the Rings”: first images of the mega-epic come to cinemas and (!) streaming

Of course, fantasy author Wolfgang Hohlbein (“The Griffin”) didn’t invent the world-famous Nibelungen saga. But he reinterpreted the material in his bestseller “Hagen von Tronje” – and Constantin now provides the film adaptation. The special one: “Hagen“ will be both a film and a series!

According to the latest press release, the theatrical version of “Hagen” will be released in the fall of 2024. The start date actually seemed to have already been set for October 31, 2024. It remains to be seen whether this will be adhered to or whether there will be minor shifts. But one thing is clear: ‘Hagen’ will also come to RTL+ as a six-part miniseries.

“Hagen”: Fantasy event with promising images

Then we’ll see how good fantasy from Europe can be – after all, the German-Czech co-production “Hagen” is competing this year with fantasy heavyweights like “The Lord of the Rings”. The second season of ‘The Rings of Power’ is expected this year, as well as a new film: the animated film ‘Lord Of The Rings: The War Of Rohirrim’ starts on December 12, 2024.

It’s clear that the Nibelungen material itself has everything it takes to surprise fantasy fans: After all, the medieval saga served as inspiration for modern fantasy epics such as ‘The Lord of the Rings’ and ‘Game Of Thrones’ – with which the new 2024 edition now has to compete on the big screen and the small screen. What is certainly hopeful: The first images of “Hagen” look strong – and bloody! See for yourself:

“Hagen” features the Burgundian gunsmith Hagen von Tronje (Gijs Naber“My Wife’s Story”) loyal to king and country. He secretly loves the king’s daughter Kriemhild (cinema newcomer Lilja van der Zwaag). When the vaunted dragon slayer Siegfried von is upside down. . Because when Siegfried is forced to marry the Valkyrie Brunhild (Rosalinde Mynster, “The Queen and the Personal Physician”) at the king’s request, events begin to happen that lead directly to destruction…

Directed by “Hagen”. Cyril boss And Filip Stennert, who also jointly staged episodes of the successful series “The Pass”. The duo worked with Doron Wisotzky to develop the script, which is based on Hohlbein’s “Hagen von Tronje.”

Now, if you want to see the adaptation of a Hohlbein story, you can check out the six-part fantasy series ‘The Greif’ on Amazon Prime Video, which was released in 2023. And if you prefer ‘The Lord of the Rings’: director Charlotte Brändström has already seen the second season of the prequel series ‘The Rings of Power’. Read what she has to say about it here:
