This is how to ski in spring: Sun, snow and happiness at the top

Snow and summit bliss: this is what winter sports enthusiasts can still experience in the spring in the Saas-Fee/Saastal destination. The astronomical start is on March 20. And if you ask meteorologists, spring actually starts on March 1.

Why are the slopes in the Saas Valley still open in April? There are (at least) two reasons for this: on the one hand, the altitude, and on the other hand, the geographical orientation of the snow sports area on Saas-Fee. The car-free village of Saas-Fee is located at an altitude of 1,800 m above sea level. M. Cable cars take winter sports enthusiasts up to 3,600 m above sea level. M. And the valley goes down to the village without any problems until the end of the season. Although the snow melts, the snow cover generally remains quite thick until the end of April.

The Saas-Grund and Saas-Almagell ski areas face west. Meaning: In the morning, the mountains protect the snow from the sun. Meanwhile, the ski season ends in Saas-Grund on 5 April, in Saas-Almagell on 7 April and in Saas-Fee on 21 April.

Midweek Special for short breaks

Spring is also ideal for enjoying the slopes during the week instead of the weekend. The plan is to briefly clear your head while everyone else is working. After all, it’s been a long time since the Christmas break at the beginning of spring. And there is still a long time until summer. It’s a great idea to take a trip to the slopes and enjoy the sun while skiing or snowboarding. The Saas-Fee/Saastal region sees it the same way and therefore offers a flexible package for short holidays in the snow.

Race on the slopes and free concert

There is also a lot going on in the Saas Valley in terms of events in the spring. The 12-hour race in Saas-Grund on March 15 and 16 will see ski and snowboard teams raising money for the Mentelity Games. Physically disabled people from all over the world come together there. Snow’n Sound takes place shortly before Easter. Then it’s time to enjoy the slopes and then dance at the free concerts in Längfluh above Saas-Fee. On Easter Sunday, children and adults prepare for the Moonlight Fight. And before the end-of-season party in Saas-Fee on April 20, the Allalin race marks the final push of the season. Dates at a glance:

15 and 16 March / 17 – 23 March: 12 hours of racing and brain games
March 23 and 24: Snow’n Sound
March 31: Moonlight Fight
March 12 and 13: Race of Allal
April 20: End of Season Party

Even though temperatures are slowly rising: the winter fun in Saas-Fee/Saastal is far from ending in spring.
