Many people do not feel comfortable at work.

It is especially important for an employee to feel comfortable in the workplace; his well-being affects his performance and therefore the company. If the climate in the office is toxic, it can lead to health problems for the person in question. The result may be burnout or depression. Increased stress levels have been proven to be harmful to the body.

Have you been feeling exhausted for a long time and having difficulty motivating yourself at work? Is your environment bothering you and you urgently need a break? “Yes!” to all these questions. If you answer, this may be a sign of an unhealthy work environment in your office. Use the four points below to find out if this is the case.

one

Lack of communication

One of the most important points for a healthy working environment: Being able to talk to each other! If there is a lack or lack of communication, something is wrong. If you feel you have been left out of important information or have been communicated with in an unprofessional and disrespectful manner, you must take action quickly.

Respect starts with tone of voice. If you feel like you’re constantly being bombarded with insulting, belittling comments or remarks, that’s pure poison. Gossip also creates an exciting atmosphere. Employees should not constantly talk negatively about their colleagues behind their backs.

2

Wrong people in leadership positions

How your boss treats you is an important consideration. Criticism is normal and needed every now and then, but the moment your boss starts getting personal, you become toxic. Despite everything, there should be a respectful relationship between you on a professional level. Your boss should also be able to receive criticism and comments from you. If this isn’t the case and they never hold you or your co-workers accountable, it’s best to talk to someone you trust at work. This is the only way things will change and your bad mood towards your boss will return.

Studies have also shown that most leaders are antisocial, extremely cold, and masters of manipulation. This doesn’t make the employee-boss situation any easier.

3

Bad working atmosphere

The atmosphere among colleagues is as important as relations with the boss. You don’t need to be best friends with everyone, but you should also avoid tense situations. This also includes backbiting, which, as mentioned before, you should leave alone. After all, gossip always leads to conflict and tension. It is also better to avoid excessive motivation.

Working hard is good, but too much of a good thing can backfire. Therefore, avoid overzealous colleagues who will do anything for success, because it is much more important for a team to be able to trust each other. Teamwork is everything, ego trips are nothing! Also a crucial point: workplace bullying. Unfortunately, bullying happens more often than expected. Once a victim is chosen, the person becomes a laughing stock. This harms not only the person affected, but also the entire work environment.

4

Lack of rest room

Even the best of the best need a break sooner or later. That’s why a beautifully furnished break room is a must. You can retreat there if you need a breather or want to chat with colleagues about the past weekend. Being able to actually turn off the device in a quiet place is not only good for your soul, it also increases productivity.

How to spot a toxic work environment in advance

But why let it get to this point? Pay attention to a few important points during the interview and notice from the very beginning what the environment is like at your potential employer.

  • Listen to your senses: Ears, eyes and nose can tell you a lot about the workplace. As you walk around the office, pay attention to your future colleagues’ tone of voice. Do they talk to each other in a friendly manner or do you hear bad comments? What does the office smell like? If there is a smell of food, this may be a sign that employees are eating lunch at work. This represents stress.
  • A look at the toilet: It may seem a little silly, but a quiet place can reveal a lot about the work atmosphere. If there is chaos and mess there, it shows how much the employees care about their colleagues. This indicates a non-cooperative working relationship.
  • Approval speed: The faster you get approval indicates how urgently a new employee is needed. This doesn’t necessarily have to do with your excellent performance, but may just happen due to time pressure. Do you really want to work in a place where everything needs to happen quickly and there is no time for detailed evaluation? Maybe you’re just a stopgap and changing jobs is part of daily life here.
