Last year, 101 million liters of wine were produced in Switzerland. Compared to the previous year, this corresponds to an increase of approximately two million liters or two percent. Due to the high temperatures and low rainfall during ripening, the sugar content was higher than normal.
The warm and dry summer of 2023 was beneficial for the vines, both in terms of combating diseases and ripening the grapes, the Federal Office of Agriculture (BLW) announced on Thursday. This promises an excellent vintage.
Last year, 11 million liters more wine was produced than the ten-year average. This corresponds to an increase of 12 percent.
79.5 million liters of wine were produced in the main wine-growing areas of western Switzerland, 16.5 million liters in German-speaking Switzerland and 4.9 million liters in Ticino and Misox. The total vineyard area in 2023 was 14,569 hectares. That is 37 hectares less than last year (-0.3 percent).
By far the largest Swiss wine producer is the Valais region near Vaud. Both cantons produce considerably more wine than the entire German-speaking part of Switzerland. Last year 36.6 million liters were pressed in Valais and 28.7 million liters in Vaud. (pre/sda)
