Roger Coronado, a lover of folklore

Roger Iván Coronado Sánchez is passionate about folklore and this love was born from his childhood. Today, he has been the leader of various folklore groups for more than 30 years. In addition, he received several awards.

Coronado Sánchez, who is a teacher at Juan Pablo II La Chorrera Bilingual School, He shares some details from his personal and professional life with Panama América.

His passion for folklore was born from childhood, “my family has always dealt with this area, grandparents, uncles and cousins. He participated in peasant weeks, and then he practiced with children for performances in schools. In addition, I have been participating in folklore groups since I was 13 years old, and as a leader there are already 33 of them.”

“For me, folklore is more than science passion and life. This gives me the opportunity to create and do the same, but differently, projecting our customs and traditions on the national and international level,” says the graduate engineer in educational sciences with an emphasis on primary education, moved.

Coronado Sánchez says he directs three grouping.

He says he’s in charge of Ensemble of folklore projections from the bilingual school La Compañía in El Valle de Antón; Sentir de mi Pueblo folklore projections located in El Higo de San Carlos (Western Panama); and a set of screenings of Huellas de mi Folklore from Las Uvas de San Carlos (Western Panama).

For this last group, he adds that they conducted two cultural exchanges in Costa Rica.

The latter two groups are composed of members from various cities in San Carlos County and neighboring counties.

Recognitions

He received recognition from folklore groups and the schools where he was the principal.

In addition, in 2021 he received an honorable mention from Office of the Municipal Mayor of San Carlos as an “honorary member of the Sancarleña Society, for our contribution to culture and education within and outside the district.”

It also has international recognition from Latin American Folklore Association (AFLA) based in Paraguay to highlight and maintain folklore on a national and international level.

Changes

For him, folklore has changed in recent years, yes evolutionary and its plasticity enables changes without changing; However, “in recent years, we see some exaggerations that clash with the authenticity and originality of our folklore elements”.
