$67 million played”Black Adam‘ at launch alone at the North American box office. That’s in line with the original $65 to $70 million forecast, but it’s a success. With Warner recently lowering expectations to $60 million, pessimists feared an even worse start due to the numerous negative reviews, which would have jeopardized existing follow-up plans. But the fans were not deterred by the negative votes and went to the cinemas.
The start of “Black Adam” is about equal to DC’s “Aquaman” ($67.8 million) and well above “Shazam!” ($53.9 million). It is also higher than other movies like “Hobbs & Shaw” ($60 million) or “San Andreas” ($54.5 million), which are mainly supported by Dwayne Johnson’s star power. Warner and DC should ignore the fact that they are way behind the start of Marvel. You can’t currently get the competitor’s movies at the box office, so there were probably no expectations in that.
The fifth best start to October in the US – and in Germany?
Behind “Joker” ($96.2 million), “Venom 2” (90), “Venom” (80.2) and “Halloween” (76.2), “Black Adam” even took the fifth best start of a movie. per month of October in North America.
Internationally, however, it is a little more restrained – and that is also the case in Germany. Nearly 300,000 movie tickets sold (including previews) are certainly not the numbers for a major blockbuster, but they are easily enough for the top spot on the charts. All in all, that’s a decent number.
We are sure: “Black Adam 2” will come
Even if there’s still a lot of room for improvement at the box office in general, we’re assuming “Black Adam 2” launches. Producer Hiram Garcia, who is also a business partner of Dwayne Johnson, has already promised that the sequel will be addressed “very soon”. There should not be a long wait.
Then you should also hope for a crowd boost through the participation of another star: Because Henry Cavill is supposed to have a bigger role as Superman in “Black Adam 2”. That’s still a bit up in the air, though, as there’s still no contract between Warner and the “The Witcher” star for further assignments like Man Of Steel. Such a contract has yet to be negotiated. Because there is a willingness on all sides to reach an agreement, Johnson is very committed to it, and his manager and ex-wife Dany Garcia also represents Cavill, the chance that it will not work is very small.
