Surprisingly common: The word wine appears frequently in the Bible

The Bible remains the best-selling and most read book of all time. A deeper analysis of the 1984 version of the Luther Bible reveals a recurring motif: wine. The word appears in many passages of the Old and New Testaments. It is used not only as a beverage, but also as a symbol of joy, fertility, and sometimes even warning.

Wine is mentioned a total of 236 times in Scripture; It is mentioned 211 times in the Old Testament and 25 times in the New Testament. In the Old Testament, wine is often associated with prosperity and abundance. For example, Psalm 104:15 says: “Wine makes one’s heart glad.” Here, wine is a sign of joy and abundance that strengthens the society and cheers up the hearts.

But the Bible also warns about the possible dangers of excessive wine consumption: “Wine causes mockery, and strong drink drives a person crazy; He who stumbles can never be wise.” This advice emphasizes the importance of self-control and avoiding excesses.

In the New Testament, wine is often mentioned in the context of the Lord’s Supper. At a wedding, Jesus Christ is said to have turned water into wine; this is a sign of his divine authority and charitable service to life. Elsewhere, wine also symbolizes the shed blood of Jesus Christ as well as the covenant between God and believers. Numerous biblical references and metaphors illustrate the complex meaning of wine. While fermented grape juice is a symbol of joy and abundance, it also warns against the dangers of excessive consumption.
