The sun is shining, the trees are budding; The first feelings of spring send many people straight to garden centres. As far as the eye can see: tulips, daffodils, hyacinths and ranunculus. Flowers add color to the house. Whether it’s field flowers you pick yourself or elegant arrangements from the florist that remind you of warm summer evenings in the garden, flowers are not just decoration, they are a part of spring. We asked Annamarie Schär, florist at Marsano on Zurich’s Löwenstrasse, how bouquets stay fresher longer.

According to the expert, the first step should be to clean the flower vase before placing the bouquet in it. This prevents the formation of bacteria that can damage the flowers. Schär also recommends changing the water every two days. The florist explains that most flowers need cold water. But individual flowers, like hydrangeas, need warm water, Schär says. Therefore, when purchasing flowers, it is always good to consult a florist so that you can arrange their care.
“We always give our customers Chrysal, which they can add to their water.” Probiotic substance keeps the water clean and prevents bacterial growth. According to Schär, you can also add a few drops of Javel to the water, but you should be careful with this because large amounts of Javel can damage flowers.

Daffodils do not like other flowers as neighbors in the vase. However, if you want to make a bouquet of daffodils, there is a trick. First you put them in the vase alone – for at least a day, then they thin out. Then wash the stems and cuts and do not cut again, clean the vase. With new water we can introduce them to other cut flowers.
Cut a thin slice from the hyacinth root and place it alone in a vase of cold water. The water in the vase should ideally be changed every two to three days.
Ranunculus also does not like too much water at once. You need to renew this every two days and cut the stems fresh at an angle so you can enjoy the ranunculus bouquet for about 10 days.

Flowers last longer when they are in the right place. Regarding the choice of location, Schär says with a smile: “Flowers do not like to be in direct sunlight. But you know that, right?” It’s better to put the bouquet in a cooler place. If the air in your home is particularly dry, humidifying the flowers occasionally may help.
The bouquet should also not be placed next to the fruit basket. Flowers fade faster due to the ethylene gas emitted by the fruit.
