PETA, the celebrity campaign against bullfighting

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) Latino has joined celebrities in calling for a halt to bullfighting in Plaza México, amid a trial that will define the direction of bullfighting in the Mexican capital.

Your campaign consists of ads installed on around the bullring the largest in the world, where you can see Mexican actresses like Kate del Castillo, Michelle Renaud and singer Sherlyn González.

In the ads you can read phrases like ‘Bullfighting is idiotic. Let’s put an end to them!’, ‘Some traditions deserve to die’, ‘It is not culture to torture a sentient being who does not want to die’ and ‘Let us respect their memory. Let’s stop the bullfights.’

In the pictures, with which PETA Latino is trying to raise awareness, the protagonist of ‘La Reina del Sur’, Kate del Castillo, was seen with her hair twisted into horns, screaming and wearing a red dress that, according to the organization, represents the anger of the majority of citizens over the continuation of bullfighting.

This Tuesday, the court will decide whether to approve the final suspension of bullfights in Plaza México, after the collective ‘Todas y Todos por Amor a los Toros’ presented a ban on the suspension of bullfights in the Mexican capital.

The judge granted a temporary suspension to avoid it bullfights in the aforementioned facility, but on February 2, the collegial court lifted that precautionary measure at least until the protection is definitively resolved.

The argument was that the Supreme National Court of Justice (SCJN) had already ruled on December 6, 2023, when it reactivated bullfighting after a year and a half suspension in Plaza México.

In other pictures, Renaud is seen with a cloak ‘bloody’ and the message “forSome traditions deserve to die,” while, evoking the Day of the Dead, González asks people to think about the horrors of bullfighting and the lives of their victims.

“It would be a crime if someone did such things on any other animal, and there is no moral, ethical or scientific justification for doing this to a bull; especially considering that the Constitution of Mexico City prohibits cruelty to animals,” the organization noted.
