Poverty is prevalent in many rural areas of Southeast Asia. “There is a big difference between children from cities and the countryside when it comes to education for the future,” says Thomas Trüb (70). A problem that the former Ringier employee noticed 20 years ago and prompted him to found the Dariu Foundation.
The milestone birthday was celebrated with a Vietnamese flying dinner by Co Chin Chin at the Studio at the Ringier Press House and impressive numbers: Thanks to the foundation, 1.2 million children have received digital education in the past three and a half years. Trub says, “Half a girl.” The surprise guest was Viktor Giacobbo (70), who ran the night with an audience known for his famous dry humor as the talk show host.
Host and Ringier CEO, Marc Walder, 57, also highlighted how important digital education is for children: “About 65 percent of children will work as adults in jobs that don’t exist today.” Dariu recently received the prestigious Bett Asia 21st Century Learning Award for his dedication. Walder: “It’s about making students independent and confident citizens of the world.”
