For Fettuccine Alfredo Day: This is how you prepare Americans’ favorite pasta dish

February 7 is National Fettuccine Alfredo Day in the United States. However, the dish seems to be little known in Italy. In reality, this is a popular pasta dish that goes by a different name even in our own country. Italians call the classic fettuccine al burro. The dish now known as fettuccine Alfredo was invented by Alfredo di Lelio in Rome in 1908. While working in her mother’s restaurant, she cooked fettuccine al triplo burro, which she called “fettuccine all’Alfredo”. Later, she opened her own restaurant in Rome and fettuccini soon became known throughout the country and the world. In 1920, American movie stars Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford discovered Di Lelio’s restaurant in Rome on their honeymoon. They were so excited about this pasta dish that they gave the chef a golden cutlery with the words “For Alfredo, the King of Pasta” written on it. Since then, Hollywood stars have been coming here regularly. The original recipe includes only three ingredients: fettuccine, parmesan cheese and butter. Today there are other versions of fettuccine Alfredo.
