Perimenopause: what does it consist of?

Perimenopause is when the body begins the natural transition to menopause, which marks the end of the fertile years. It can start at the age of 35.

As you cross over perimenopause, The body’s production of estrogen – the main female hormone – rises and falls.

These fluctuations can cause symptoms such as irregular periods, hot flashes and vaginal dryness.

Once 12 consecutive months have passed without a period, you have officially transitioned from perimenopause to menopause.

Menopause can occur after 40 or after 50, but the average age is 51.

– Forgetfulness

During perimenopause, you may also begin to notice that you have difficulties related to memory and concentration.

This is sometimes known as “brain fog” and is quite common. Women often express concern that this is an early sign of dementia. This is generally not the case.

– Mood swings

They are common and may include irritability, fatigue, sadness or anxiety. These mood swings can occur as a result of falling estrogen levels. Depression is also a common side effect of menopause. It is important to share with your healthcare provider how you are feeling and changes in your mood.

– Gaining weight

Women often notice that they eat the same and exercise the same and still gain weight. It is common for women to notice weight gain during perimenopause and the transition to menopause, especially in the middle of the period.
