The civil war of “Dance of the Dragons” really got going at the end of the first season of “House Of The Dragon”. Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) and her half-brother Aegon II (Tom Glynn-Carney) have each been crowned and will now fight for control of the Seven Kingdoms – by any means necessary. Of course, that also includes dragons for Targaryens. And whoever has more dragons has a clear advantage.
Therefore, in episode 10, Daemon (Matt Smith) heads to Dragon Mountain, a volcano, to ‘tame’ one of the dragons living there: The animal is Vermithor, also called the “Bronze Fury”, the second largest dragon in the era of “House Of The Dragon” after Aemond’s dragon Vhagar. This is what showrunner Ryan Condal says in an interview Variety confirmed.
To avoid being immediately grilled by the dragon, Daemon approaches him singing. The song is in High Valyrian – the language used in the Game Of Thrones world to train and command dragons. The song lines are not subtitled in the episode. However, we do include the Valyrian text and the English translation found – we obviously cannot guarantee its accuracy.
The lyrics of “Hāros Bartossi”
The song is called “Hāros Bartossi” (English: “With Three Heads”) and was written by Ti Mikkel and translated by David J. Peterson. Peterson is the ‘language creator’ of the ‘Game Of Thrones’ world, developing the Dothraki and Valyrian languages. You can find the Valyrian and English text at website, We have tried to translate the four verses into German for you:
Of course, you can’t really ‘tame’ a dragon this way; a dragon even listens to its dragon rider. But a dragon only bonds with one person. Only when this person dies is the dragon free to form a new bond.
This will be Vermithor’s new rider
With any luck, few other people can approach dragons without being instantly scorched – apart from one or that one solid dragon rider – mainly Targaryens, but also dragon trainers, some of whom we see in “House Of The Dragon” have already been seen in the dragon’s den. For this they use Valyrian commands. Daemon has now approached Vermithor and calmed him with a song.
Daemon probably doesn’t want to win the dragon for himself, but for someone else on Rhaenyra’s side. After all, Daemon already ‘has’ a dragon: Caraxes, also called ‘Bloodworm’.
In the original book by George RR Martin the Targaryen bastard Hugo Hammer / Hugh Hammer to the Horseman of Vermithor and fight with him on the “Black” side for Queen Rhaenyra. The last rider of Vermithor before Hugh Hammer was King Jaehaerys I Targaryen. After his death, Vermithor retreated to a cave in Dragon Mountain near Drachenstein, where Daemon visits him in episode 10.
Hugo Hammer has already been confirmed for the second season of “House Of The Dragon” and will be played by Kieran Edit. He is one of the Dragonseeds, as the Targaryen bastards are called. What else awaits you in season 2 can be found here:
The dragons of the “Greens” and the “Blacks”
Currently have the green ones have four dragons, one of which is a young animal, the black ones have seven adult dragons – that is: after the first season finale, only six remain. If Daemon manages to win over the riderless and feral dragons, which nest conveniently near Dragonstone, they can further increase their lead. Currently, there are Vermithor and Silverwing in Dragon Mountain, and Laenor’s dragon Seasmoke in Driftmark, and there are also three wild dragons – This would give the blacks twelve dragons. Daemon also hatches dragon eggs.
We will find out what happens next with the dragons in season 2 of “House Of The Dragon” in the summer of 2024. Novelist George RR Martin has already been able to watch some episodes:
