The MCU’s multiverse saga, which started in 2021, now includes ten films and as many series. But it’s still unclear where exactly everything will lead in the next two “Avengers” events, “Avengers 5” (theatrical release: April 29, 2026) and “Avengers 6: Secret Wars” (theatrical release: May 5, 2026 ). 2027). In any case, for a long time it was said that the superhero group would really have to deal with the new main villain Kang, the Conqueror, who was already gradually being built up (in “Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania”). and numerous variants are already immediately available).
But after Kang actor Jonathan Majors was found guilty of multiple charges in a domestic violence trial and subsequently fired by Marvel, that plan is in jeopardy. Will Marvel stick with it and simply recast the role (e.g. with Colman Domingo or John David Washington, who was recently rumored for the role)? Or does dropping the subtitle “The Kang Dynasty” and hiring a new screenwriter for “Avengers 5” indicate that they will deviate from the planned Kang storyline and move on to a different villain?
Or will you even rely on the tried and tested and bring back the villain who had a decisive influence on the finale of the mega-successful Infinity saga? We’re talking, of course, about the passionate sniper Thanos, who once wiped out half of the entire universe – and whose MCU comeback is apparently actually being considered.
Josh Brolin teases Thano’s return
Thanos actor Josh Brolin itself has revealed that there are plans for THE antagonist of the Infinity Saga to reappear in the MCU: “I heard they were bringing him back,” Brolin said in a new interview with the site . However, this is not yet an official confirmation, especially because Brolin also admits in his further statements that he is not sure whether it is really true.
However, a return of Thanos wouldn’t be as far-fetched as it initially seems. His MCU story seemed completed after a long build-up and an arduous battle in “Avengers 4: Endgame” (he was killed twice here, with previous MCU figurehead Iron Man even sacrificing himself for the final blow). But a comeback probably wouldn’t involve the same Thanos, who is in fact dead and likely to stay that way…
Thanos variant in “Avengers 5” and/or “Avengers 6”?
Instead, the appearance of a Thanos variant from a parallel world would obviously be an option in the Multiverse saga, as we also saw in “Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness” and the animated series “What If…?” Brolin, who once again lent his voice to the Titan in the latter, also spoke in this context of “a different kind of Thanos.”
But even if that happens, we don’t believe Marvel will suddenly pull Thanos out of the hat as Kang’s replacement and simply put the same main villain back at center stage. Instead, he could more of a peripheral player in the impending war in the multiverse that may await us in “Avengers 5” and “Avengers 6”.
Before we find out more here, we’re presented with a concentrated load of MCU multiverse mayhem in “Deadpool 3,” which opens in German cinemas on July 24, 2024 and will be the first trailer to be part of the Super Bowl. Meanwhile, Josh Brolin can be seen on the big screen in “Dune: Part Two” starting February 29.
