The story of Nutella begins in Piedmont, Italy, in 1940: Italian confectioner Pietro Ferrero (†1949) invented the first form of spread called “Pasta gianduja” (Italian for nougat paste). Eleven years later he called it “Super Cream.” Its feature was that the miracle cream from the Ferrero pastry shop was stored in a barrel. The children came to the oven with a slice of bread and spread it with a mixture of sugar, hazelnuts, cocoa, milk powder and vanillin.
In 1964, an Italian law banned the word “Super” in a brand name. That’s why a new name was needed: “Nutella”. The name consists of the words Nut- (English for hazelnut) and -ella (Italian diminutive for female).
A year later, the hazelnut cream was also sold in Germany and Switzerland. From then on, the spread began to triumph at breakfast tables as far away as America.
The first “Nutella bar” opened in New York in 2014. A shop that only sells hazelnut nougat cream. There were meters long queues in front of the newly opened store in Manhattan.
Today, Nutella is available in more than 160 countries and over 350,000 tons of Nutella are produced every year, meaning you could travel around the world 1.8 times. You could fill the Great Wall of China eight times with the cups that pass over the counters each year.
Nutella’s recipe is not the same in every country; In Switzerland, the cream is softer and sweeter than, for example, Nutella. B. in Germany. Depending on the recipe, 100 grams of Nutella contains 514 kcal or 547 kcal. In November 2017, there were some changes in production: “Ferrero has visibly changed the Nutella recipe for the first time in many years.” The new Nutelle has more milk powder and sugar, but less cocoa and fat.
Nutella has many fans, the German Facebook page alone has more than 30 million “likes”, and the Instagram account of the hazelnut nougat cream has more than 1.6 million followers.
By the way, a piece of bread with Nutella is 159 kcal, if you eat 2 slices you have to run for 28 minutes to burn them.
