The first images from ‘Squid Game’ season 2 show unexpected changes

Two and a half years ago, the first season of “Squid Game” was released on Netflix. The South Korean satire broke all records on the streaming service and became a global phenomenon. The first season still leads the rankings of the most watched Netflix series. “Squid Game” was viewed 265 million times.

The second season is eagerly awaited. It has been clear for some time that Netflix wants to release the sequel this year. Now the streaming service has revealed the first images and a clip of the new episodes.

Netflix has released a total of four images from the upcoming second season, featuring four different characters.

The images show the following figures:

Above all, the appearance of the main character Gi-hun raises questions. As a reminder, Gi-hun dyed his hair red at the end of the first season. He had won the sadistic competition against 455 other competitors, meaning he was the only survivor. He won a prize money of $4.56 million.

Series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk later revealed the meaning behind this transformation:

In the photo from season 2, Gi-hun’s hair is black again. Season 2 will show what that means. Little is known about the plot. Perhaps Gi-hun’s anger will give way to a new determination. Because he hasn’t given up on his revenge plans from the end of the first season.

This is evident from the first clip that Netflix also published on Thursday. This immediately follows the last scene from the first season.

Gi-hun had gone to the airport to visit his daughter in Los Angeles. At the terminal, he sees the game recruiter playing the slap game with a new, desperate man – the first step to the deadly “Squid Game”. Gi-hun gets the invitation card and calls the number on it. At this point his motives change: he wants to take on the organizers.

At this point the new clip begins:

“I will find you,” Gi-hun says in the clip. “Whatever it costs.”

Season 2 of “Squid Game” is scheduled for 2024. An exact start on Netflix is not yet known. Last year, the streaming service released the controversial reality variant ‘Squid Game: The Challenge’.
