The Technorama in Winterthur has been a popular excursion destination for school classes and families for more than four decades – and the number of visitors is constantly growing. This is one of the reasons why it is time for the science center to renovate and expand its buildings. This is being carried out within the framework of the “Technorama 2050” project.
“In order to continue to offer guests a safe and high-quality experience in the future, the building technology and electrical installations will be renewed, the building envelope will be renovated and heat generation and distribution will be replaced by an energy-efficient and sustainable solution,” according to the official press release. . They also want to expand the catering areas and improve the acoustics in the exhibitions.
The expectation is that the renovation will take place between the end of 2027 and the beginning of 2030. From 2028, the main building will be closed for 18 months. However, activities continue: with laboratories, the Tinkering exhibition, the outdoor Technorama park and current and new exhibitions and shows in temporary exhibition spaces.
The expansion of the service and catering areas is intended to shorten waiting times. And thanks to improved acoustics throughout the building and the separation of the various exhibitions by walls, visitors should be able to concentrate better.
They also want to ‘break down and prevent barriers’. People with a visual impairment should be able to orientate themselves more easily in the future. In addition, the exhibitions are supplemented with texts in simple language, pictograms, sign language and audio descriptions.
Thanks to the renovation, the current outdoor space with an open roof becomes a closed space and is therefore accessible all year round. There are also picnic areas, relaxation areas and a bistro.
Because the restaurant with its 200 seats is already reaching its limits, there will be a catering expansion in the park. This will create an additional 100 places.
From 2030, electricity must be saved through greater efficiency and sustainability must become more important. Switching from gas to a heat pump. And in the future, most of the energy will be generated by photovoltaic systems.
