“I was young and crazy”: that’s why Robert Downey Jr. glad he didn’t win an Oscar thirty years ago

Robert Downey Jr. can look back on an eventful career: In the late 1980s and early 1990s, he was considered a very talented newcomer in the field of acting. awarded an Oscar nomination for the lead role in the biopic”Chaplin“. But a few years later things quickly went downhill for the 58-year-old: Downey Jr. struggled with drug problems, had to spend 15 months behind bars and was subsequently considered a risk factor by film studios, which ultimately prevented good role offers from coming. It almost seemed as if the actor had already had his best days – when, thanks to Marvel, a new door unexpectedly opened: the comic book giant cast him as Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, leaving Downey Jr. became one of the highest paid stars in the industry. .

He is currently hoping for an Oscar for a third time for his supporting role as Lewis Strauss in Christopher Nolan’s biopic ‘Oppenheimer’, after receiving his second nomination in 2009 for ‘Tropic Thunder’, but once again came away empty-handed. Anyone who thinks the “Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang” star thinks his Oscar win is long overdue — after all, his nomination for “Chaplin” was more than 30 years ago — is wrong. In retrospect, Downey Jr. actually glad he didn’t win Best Actor in 1993.

By the way, you can currently stream “Chaplin” completely free on the Amazon Prime Video channel FILM LEGENDS with a 7-day trial subscription:

“I was young and crazy,” the “Sherlock” actor explained in an interview (through ). “Winning would have given me the impression that I was on the right track.” So Downey Jr. believes that at the age of 27 he would not have drawn the right conclusions from such a high honor and that this might have gotten him into even more trouble.

We’ll see if Downey Jr. this time can triumph against heavyweight competitors like Robert De Niro (“Killers Of The Flower Moon”) or Ryan Gosling (“Barbie”) – he recently lost to Al Pacino and Heath Ledger March August 10, 2024. The Academy Awards will be held for the 96th awarded once in Hollywood.
