Postulate calls for free lockers for homeless people in Zurich

Homeless people in the city of Zurich must be able to store their belongings in a municipal locker. The Greens and AL demand this in a postulate published on Thursday.

In their proposal, the Greens and AL propose placing lockers in central locations that provide sufficient storage space and are free. It is important for the homeless to be able to store valuables, sleeping bags and backpacks.

The lockers at train stations are not suitable for this. They are expensive, too small and often cannot be used long enough. According to AL and the Greens, such urban lockers could also be a way for homeless people to have a first contact with a point of contact.

The proposal will be discussed at a future city council meeting. Given the left-green majority, he should have a good chance.

Several cities in Germany have already taken the issue of homelessness a step further. They set up ‘living boxes’ for the homeless, also called ‘safe spaces’, because privacy is possible there for a certain period.

The newest facility with six residential boxes was inaugurated on Tuesday in Berlin-Neukölln. The white mini houses are made of plywood and are each three square meters in size.
