New Supergirl in theaters: “House Of The Dragon” and Disney star in the running for role in James Gunn’s DCU

With the DCU, James Gunn is building a completely new franchise, which will finally tell several stories from the DC comics in one piece in the cinema. One of the important figures in his plans is Supergirl. The heroine would appear in the DCU opening movie “Superman: Legacy“Join Before They Start”Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow“gets its own movie.

After numerous actresses such as Cailee Spaeny (“Priscilla”) and Emilia Jones (“CODA”) were considered for the role, the Now it comes down to a duel between two candidates: both Milly Alcock like Meg Donnelly According to the industry magazine, they stood in front of the camera for test shotswho should decide which of them gets the role. Both have been associated with the role for a long time and are now said to have left everyone else behind after the extensive casting process.

Milly Alcock is best known for her role as Rhaenyra Targaryen in the Game Of Thrones series House of the Dragon. Meg Donnelly is part of the cast of Disney’s hit series ‘Zombies’. She is also already very familiar with the role. Because Donnelly currently voices Supergirl in DC’s animated films.

A completely new Supergirl in the cinema

We already know that Supergirl will be one of the central characters of the new DCU era, alongside Superman (David Corenswet) and Batman (yet to be cast). James Gunn is – as the film title makes clear – heavily influenced by Tom King’s celebrated comedy miniseries ‘Woman of Tomorrow’ aka ‘The Woman of Tomorrow’, which to some extent reinvented Supergirl. Critics and audiences were enthusiastic about the way the author managed to develop her into a completely independent heroine who is more than just a female version of Superman.

Presenting his DCU plans, James Gunn also revealed what sets Supergirl apart from her little cousin Superman. While he was sent to Earth as a baby and raised by loving parents, she grew up on a run-down piece of Krypton. These differences will be strongly reflected in the characters’ personalities.

While James Gunn wrote “Superman: Legacy” himself and will soon direct it for a theatrical release on July 10, 2025, the screenplay for “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” comes from Ana Nogueira. The director position is still vacant and there is currently no start date.
