The quality of life is the highest in this Swiss city

A wide cultural offer, a good transport network and a huge choice of services – city life has many advantages. But not every city has the same quality of life: these Swiss cities offer the best quality of life.

This week, the Federal Statistical Office published a new edition of “City Statistics” on the quality of life in the nine largest Swiss cities. The well-being of the population was measured based on different aspects (e.g. infrastructure, mobility, income). Here you can discover which city has the highest quality of life.

The closer the facilities are to each other, the more attractive the city is. Geneva has the best quality of life in this regard. Most amenities can be reached within less than 500 meters. In Lugano people have the greatest distance.

People in Zurich have the highest taxable income. On average, employees earn 70,393 francs per year. Basel comes in second place with an income of 66,922 francs per year. The residents of St.Gallen have the lowest income with 53,350 francs.

Mobility is of great importance for both work and leisure activities. However, in some cities you have to dig very deep into your wallet. You pay the most for a monthly ticket in Winterthur and the city of Zurich: 85 francs. St.Gallen has the cheapest monthly ticket at 69 francs.

The death rate among people under 65 is highest in Winterthur and Basel, while the fewest people die in Geneva.

External childcare allows parents to meet their professional obligations. Zurich and Lausanne have the most childcare places for toddlers. In St.Gallen, Winterthur and Lucerne things look more difficult in this respect.

A city without cultural offerings would be quite boring. Such places are important for maintaining social contacts or for attractive leisure activities. The following graph shows how many theaters, cinemas and museums there are in Swiss cities per 100,000 inhabitants.

In the new report from the Federal Statistical Office, no city stands out. Zurich performs well in terms of childcare places, income and accessibility to services, but the cost of living is higher than in other cities. Lugano has a lot of cultural offerings, but the distances to services are quite long compared to other cities. Geneva has the lowest mortality rates among people under 65 and services there are the quickest to access. However, childcare places are quite rare in Calvin-Stadt. By comparison: our federal capital Bern performs fairly average in all areas.
