Eat healthier: How to save fat in the kitchen?

Since the average Swiss consumes more daily fat than recommended by scientific organizations such as the Swiss Nutrition Society, fat-saving preparation methods may make sense.

Save calories with tips

If you want to lose weight, it’s not just about the amount of food you eat and exercising regularly, but also how the food is prepared. Fat carries flavor and also contributes to the crunchy effect of many foods.

However, as is often assumed, a large amount of oil is not needed for crispness and correct taste. Good news: Food can be made nice and crispy even with very little oil. We show you how it works.

Six tips for cooking with less oil

  1. Always add oil to the heated pan first. It will be faster and you will automatically need less of it.
  2. If you brush the heated frying pan with oil and do not spill it, you can save up to 90 percent of oil.
  3. The oven offers a good alternative to the frying pan. If the fried food is thoroughly mixed with a little oil and spices before cooking and placed on a baking tray lined with baking paper, the result is almost oil-free, crispy french fries, baked potatoes, french fries or spaetzli. To prepare a crispy Rösti, you only need 5 to 10g of butter if you bake them on baking paper in the oven.
  4. Cooking in a Roman pot is also worth a try. Stews, poultry and fish dishes cooked in clay pots without adding any oil are incomparably delicious. The relatively long cooking time of 1½-2 hours contributes to this. It’s also super simple to prepare: Add the ingredients, season (if not already) and you’re done. The cooking job is now complete and no further monitoring is required. If you prepare meat, fish or poultry together with vegetables in a Roman pot, you will not only save on preparation time, but also the number of calories can be significantly reduced: you will not need a drop of oil for cooking.
  5. The roasting bag offers a simple method of preparing low-fat and aromatic meat and fish dishes in the oven. To do this, put the spiced roasted food in a roasting bag with vegetables and herbs or 1 tablespoon of oil, then close it tightly and fry it in a preheated oven at 180-200 degrees.
  6. When purchasing a new frying pan, choose a coated pan; food rarely sticks, even if it is lean.
