“I apologize for my ignorance”: Director legend asks Ryan Gosling and Greta Gerwig for forgiveness for “Barbie” insult

Since his uncritical to openly propagandistic Putin interviews in 2017, Oliver Stone’s political agenda must be viewed with caution. But in the ’80s and ’90s, the director shot a slew of cinematic milestones — from “Platoon” to “Wall Street” to “JFK: Tatort Dallas.” When he talks about the current cinema landscape, it’s usually quite entertaining – regardless of whether you share his strong and controversial opinions.

This was recently the case Ryan Gosling caught, who has been known since his appearance as Ken in “Barbie“It felt like everyone agreed – in an interview with the business magazine Stone blasted the “Drive” star’s choice of role (via ):

“Ryan Gosling wastes his time doing this stuff for money.”the 77-year-old said. “He shouldn’t be part of this infantilization of Hollywood. It’s all about fantasy, fantasy, fantasy, including all war films: fantasy, fantasy, fantasy.” According to him, the 43-year-old would prefer to make “serious films”.

But now things have taken a rather unexpected turn: After Stone’s harsh words were picked up again by some media, the “Natural killers“-Maker felt it necessary to intervene – and publicly admit he was wrong. On X (formerly Twitter) Stone provided context for his comments: “At the time [des Interviews] “I was promoting my documentary about nuclear weapons in Europe and had little to no knowledge of the project other than the title.”

In July — about a month after his caustic comments — he saw “Barbie” in theaters and appreciated it “for its originality and its themes.” “I found the filmmakers’ approach very different than I expected. I apologize for my ignorance.”

Stone also praises the coming-of-age film “Lady Bird,” which “Barbie” director Greta Gerwig made in 2017. This was one of his favorite movies of the year. And that’s not all: While he previously sensed the downfall of Hollywood, he now sees the success of ‘Barbie’ as a good sign. “Barbie’s box office performance has been a huge boost to morale in our industry, which has been very welcome. I wish Greta and the entire Barbie team the best of luck at the Oscars.”

Oliver Stone is also capable of admitting mistakes – but it is unlikely that he will become a fan of the “John Wick” series again in this life, as you can read in this article:
