In three long episodes, ‘The Continental’ explored the history of the hotel of the same name from the world of the action series ‘John Wick’ and especially that of hotel operator Winston. He is played in the films by Ian McShane – and he has little appreciation for the prequel.
The Brit, who is known to rarely be at a loss for open words, cannot hide his disdain for the series in an interview about his upcoming hitman thriller ‘American Star’. When asked what he thinks of ‘The Continental’, he answers as follows:
“I wouldn’t watch it. I have no intention. Nobody looked at it – I don’t think so, Keanu [Reeves] nor Chad [Stahelski]. It has nothing to do with our films. It’s just a matter of a TV company making money from the series and taking advantage of the option.
What particularly annoys McShane is that those responsible for the series were just doing their own thing. He also cannot resist taking a swipe at the poor impression that “The Continental” leaves behind. He continues in his answer in the interview:
“You never asked us about anything, like why would I be interested in seeing it? Your arrogance in releasing the show is beyond my comprehension. I wish them well, but I guess it appeared and disappeared, right?
The new world of “John Wick” – all under the control of Chad Stahelski
Chad Stahelski, spoken to by Ian McShane, has also made it clear through the flower in the past that he is very uninterested in ‘The Continental’ – even though the director of all the ‘John Wick’ films was too diplomatic to say so directly say. However, he pointed out that he had “no say” in the series. That’s why he’s trying to gain more control over the franchise.
This has now actually happened. It was recently confirmed that Chad Stahelslki now has full control of the entire John Wick franchise. This is intended to ensure that “quality, tone and vision remain consistent” going forward – which could be interpreted as a swipe at the only spin-off “The Continental” to date.
We’ve known for a while that Stahelski is working on his own series in the ‘John Wick’ universe. The cinema spin-off ‘Ballerina’ with Ana de Armas as a hitman has already been made into a film.
Ian McShane is currently on a promotional tour for his new film “American Star” and has also made the statements mentioned above in an interview with Movieweb.
In ‘American Star’, the actor portrays an aging assassin tasked with taking out a target in Fuerteventura. But because his intermediary reveals too late who exactly the victim is, the killer kills time and even makes a friend. The revelation of who he has to kill is all the more inappropriate.
