Jason Statham and “The Beekeeper” dethroned: this is the new number 1 in the German cinema charts

With statements like “I’ll peel the cucumber for you” in the cinema, Jason Statham is currently conjuring up memories of the action cinema of yesteryear – and the legendary German dubbed versions that often accompany it. And that’s exactly what audiences apparently want to see: “The Beekeeper” conquered the German cinema charts when it opened in mid-January with 180,000 tickets sold – and now has a worldwide box office of more than $75 million. Pretty respectable for a gritty film with an R-rating or FSK-18 rating and an audience with purchasing power, but not necessarily a huge one – which recently even became the highest-rated Statham film on Rotten Tomatoes.

However, a week later the smart and powerful Brit was forced to admit defeat to the RomComs of the world. While the US charts are topping with the re-release of ‘Girls Club’, leads the local charts this past week”Where the lie falls” bee. Yes, Will Gluck’s latest romantic comedy (“Easy to Have”, “Friends with Benefits”) is also a hit here.

The film, starring “Top Gun 2” star Glen Powell and “Euphoria” actress Sydney Sweeney, has already grossed more than $100 million internationally. The film premiered in Germany on December 18 and had attracted more than 222,500 people to local movie theaters by Sunday – and put Jason Statham in his place. “The Beekeeper” ends up in second place with a respectable distance and around 130,000 tickets sold. Still remarkable: the film by David Ayer (“Suicide Squad”) paid loudly In contrast to the week before, only 22 percent.

“Poor Things” starts strong

In third and fourth place are the animated films ‘Out of the Pond’ (122,500 tickets sold) and ‘Wonka’ (100,000), two long-running favorites that will continue to see many people going to the cinema in the new year. The top 5 is completed with “Aquaman 2: Lost Kingdom” (72,500).

Poor things” takes a strong sixth place at the start. The wonderfully creative and definitely worthy Oscar candidate from “The Favorite” creator Yorgos Lanthimos received a full five stars in the FILMSTARTS review, making it one of the cinematic highlights of the year for us – and making an excellent debut at the German box office.

Because The film premiered in only 143 cinemas – and thanks to excellent print editing, it still attracted no fewer than 72,000 visitors. And we can well imagine that ‘Poor Things’ will also do well next week. Finally, after the launch, it will probably become known what an extraordinary cinema experience Yorgos Lanthimos offers us again here – which will probably play a role in some categories when it is said again on the night of March 10 to 11, 2024. : “And the Oscars go to …”
