“Off The Grid”: that’s the story
Teacher Alice Hayes (Mahendru) struggles with psychological problems and can no longer cope with the stress of everyday life and her ever-increasing debts. That’s why Alice’s husband Dave (Gibson) decides to make a fresh start with her and their daughters Riley (Lexy Kolker) and Mary (Madison Friedman). A wooden cabin in the mountains becomes the family’s new home.
But the Hayes are far from the only ones who want to escape their daily lives there. Eric (Cudlitz), who lives in the woods, and his wife Susie (Dionne Audain) teach them everything they need to survive far from civilization – such as how to use weapons. And the eccentric Steve (Tim Heidecker) and his teenage daughter Lana (Ava Kolker) also live here.
Meanwhile, ten-year-old Riley tries to make the best of her new environment. But here too, the problems that her parents thought they had left behind them naturally resurface. It doesn’t take long before authorities become aware of people living in nature without permission. Riley and her sister soon find themselves in an extremely dangerous environment…
