“The Beekeeper” Jason Statham has competition – and he is 94 (!) years old: new action film is celebrated with a 100% rating

Current action hit “The Beekeeper” begins with Internet scammers stripping an old woman. After being robbed of all her money, she commits suicide. This brings Jason Statham into the role of the eponymous beekeeper. In the upcoming action-comedy ‘Thelma’, the story unfolds differently.

Here too it starts with internet scammers who scam an old woman and rob her of all her money. At first, Thelma (June Squibb) wants to sink into the ground in shame. But then she reads in the newspaper how Tom Cruise has not suffered the ravages of time and how he remains an action star. And what he can do, she has been able to do for a long time. With the support of her boyfriend Ben (Richard Roundtree) from the nearby retirement home and his scooter, she sets out to get her money back and track down the scammers.

100% on Rotten Tomatoes for “Thelma”

“Thelma” just celebrated its world premiere at the renowned Sundance Film Festival – and was extremely well received. There are only a few reviews available, but they are without exception positive. On the summary collection page Rotten tomatoes there is a perfect score of 100%.

The action comedy from debut director Josh Margolin is described as a ‘feel-good film’. praised as a “hilarious, age-appropriate reinterpretation of action movie clichés.”

Of course, the main actress June Squibb, now 94 years old, is especially celebrated. She doesn’t act as sassy as Jason Statham, but it’s just as satisfying to see her take matters into her own hands as Thelma, says one review.

In addition to the actress, who only made her film debut in 1990 at the age of 61, but has since appeared in more than 90 films and series, ‘Shaft’ action legend Richard Roundtree mixes up the villains. Also in attendance are Parker Posey as Thelma’s daughter, Clark Gregg as her husband, “The White Lotus” star Fred Hechinger as the grandson and screen icon Malcolm McDowell on the villain’s side.

We don’t know yet when “Thelma” will be released in German cinemas. There is also no trailer available at the moment. After the positive initial reactions, we cannot wait for the publication, which will certainly take place in 2024.
