Get on your skis!: The most beautiful cross-country ski trails in Switzerland

class = “sc-cffd1e67-0 iQNQmc”>

Cross-country skiing is booming. The cross-country ski trails in Toggenburg SG are beautiful.

one

Toggenburg, SG: Cross-country skiing with ski jumping superstar Simon Ammann

According to Toggenburg, winter sports enthusiasts actually associate it with ski jumping rather than cross-country skiing. Finally, four-time Olympic champion Simon Amman hails from the beautiful valley in eastern Switzerland. The former superstar recently played at Toggenburg’s Lower St. Johann even bought a hotel in his village. But Simon Ammann’s hometown has a lot to offer not only for long-haul flyers but also for cross-country skiers. Classic fans and skaters will find great cross-country trails in five local areas. The best part: In some of them, you can continue your hobby even at night, thanks to the most modern lighting installations. www.toggenburg.org

Lötschental, VS: Cross-country skiing in Tschäggättä

A winter dream: Lötschental

It is said that the heart rate of cross-country skiers in Lötschental is always slightly higher than in other parts of Switzerland. The reason: the fear that somewhere in the wildly romantic valley a lost Tschäggättä might jump from behind a tanner and storm towards the peaceful cross-country skiers with his pine mask and rattle. Of course this is nonsense. Those wearing traditional masks in Lötschental are no longer as bad as in the old days. They also don’t target cross-country skiers. One more reason to visit the magnificent cross-country ski trails at the foot of Fafleralp. www.loetschental.ch

3

Val Müstair, GR: In the footsteps of Olympic champion Dario Cologna

Unobstructed winter views, fir trees covered in fresh snow and the chance for a good dose of winter sun: that’s what a trip to the cross-country ski paradise of Val Müstair offers. The remote Graubnden valley is not only home to the World Cup sprint course in Tschierv (an integral part of the “Tour de Ski” cross-country ski stage race). Many beautiful circular trails and the challenging panoramic trail “La sulagliva” are also waiting to be discovered here. www.val-muestair.engadin.com

4

Langis, OW: Obwalden’s cross-country ski Eldorado

No, the people of Obwalden are not very modest when it comes to cross-country ski trails. As for the cross-country skiing areas Glaubeberg-Langis, they generally speak of the “Eldorado of cross-country skiers”. But it must be admitted that anyone who takes a few tours of the newly snow-covered Obwalden mountains will automatically be enthusiastic. Some of the well-marked trails pass through beautiful moorland landscapes, and the views of the Alpine peaks are spectacular. In total, the region offers approximately 25 kilometers of classic and 25 kilometers of skating trails. www.loipe-langis.ch

5

Kandersteg, BE: With lots of pfuus to “Höh”

Popular destination near Kandersteg: Oeschinensee.

All of the approximately 55 kilometers of trails in former Federal Councilor Adolf Ogi’s hometown can be used as a circular route. Kandersteg’s destination is the 14 kilometer long panoramic trail “Höh”. If you want to reach “Höh”, which is 1,318 meters above sea level, you need plenty of “Pfuus ide Bei” and good downhill technique. Less challenging but no less fun are the short 3-kilometer trail along Kander or the 5-kilometer-long Kandersteg trail past the northern portal of Lötschberg. The night tour on the 6 kilometer long night track, which is open every day between 17.30-21.00, is absolutely special. www.kandersteg.ch

6

Les Mosses, VD: Cross-country skiing looks like Röstigraben

Snow fun at Les Mosses.

The high plateau of Les Mosses is located between 1,380 and 1,680 meters above sea level and offers a total of 36 kilometers of trails for classic and roller cross-country skiers. The trending sport here is called “Ski de fond” and it attracts more and more people every day. Thanks to its high location and relatively high snow safety, you can enjoy cross-country skiing on the Vaud plateau until mid-April. The Swiss Biathlon Cup has been held in this region for twenty years. www.aigle-leysin-lesmosses.ch

Campra, TI: Campra: Northern Sports in the Italian-Speaking South

Cross-country skiing in Ticino? Of course it works. So in “Centro Nordico Campra”. The area on the south side of Lukmanier offers 28 kilometers of cross-country ski trails and has magnificent nature. The landscape of alder forests, the rugged rock faces of the surrounding gorges and rivers that often freeze over in the winter months shows that Ticino is much more than palm trees and Swiss Italianate style. www.campra.ch
