Internet excitement: Funny dinosaur picture becomes a meme

According to researchers, the species called Stenocranio boldi lived almost 300 million years before the dinosaurs.

Over the past few days, some users have created images called memes with it. Among them was comedian Sebastian Hotz (“El Hotzo”), followed by 1.4 million people on Instagram. He wrote: “Mr. Lindner, spend 100 billion private assets, we need to build a Jurassic Park in Helgoland and clone 100 bums like this.”

Last week, the Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin published a study depicting the animal that lived about 300 million years ago. The museum commented on several user posts on Instagram on Monday, saying: “Perhaps the oldest meme in the world!”

Researchers are happy

When asked on Tuesday, scientist and paleoartist Frederik Spindler, who created the illustration, was delighted with the answer. “I think it’s nice that the paleo world and the internet world are intertwined,” the 40-year-old told the German Press Agency. The 3D reconstruction was all about showing the essential features. He couldn’t change the expression on his face: “I can’t make the animal look more serious. They look a bit like dolphins, they can’t look serious.”

Spindler said he, too, had researched similar animals but actually knew less about amphibians, and as an artist, scientists were asking this question.

While questions have been asked about Stenokranio fan items in the comments, Spindler isn’t thinking that far ahead yet. “A little bit of internet excitement coming out of the paleo scene shouldn’t be exploited.” He also expects the primitive dinosaur to disappear from the timelines again within a few days.

The term primitive dinosaur was recognized

Spindler said he was happy that the term primitive dinosaur is better known and now has a face, so to speak. It has no connection with dinosaurs, as the Berlin museum announced last week. Rather, it is a popular collective name for quadrupeds of ancient times. The fact that it is not a dinosaur is also important for Berlin researcher Florian Witzmann, who participated in the study: Stenokranio boldi is not a reptile, as is often wrongly assumed.
